How did the building of the Panama Canal affect those living in Panama and its overall economy?

For 30 points... The building of the Canal gave many people jobs, but left Panama "cut in half". It also started a revolution that gave many people freedom.  The Canal has helped Panama’s economy in an extreme way. The revenue from the Canal has not always been up to Panamanian standards, but with out the Canal Panama would have been way behind or may not have even came into existence.
